Walford Park and Recreation Minutes

Regular Meeting                                                                                                                                   Tuesday January 4th, 2022

Meeting called to order at 7:03 PM.  Lane, Primmer, Hebert, Miner present.  Davis absent.

Motion to approve minutes from December 7th, 2021 by Hebert.  Seconded by Lane. Approved unanimous.

Basketball Court

Members are awaiting bid return from multiple companies regarding basketball court installation.  Diagram of the possible sizes was shared for review among the members.  Current court is 25' x 25'.  Planned court approximately 90' x 50' centered in the park space.

2022 Baseball season

Regarding participation with Fairfax - Joe Kell has been contacted and has been sharing rules/expectations for the upcoming T-ball and coach pitch seasons.  Walford and Fairfax will again collectively schedule games between the teams for the two towns.

Regarding IVL - generally a good experience, will continue as part of the IVL for LL and PL.

Coaching needs were discussed - check box to be included in sign-up form for 2022:

  • Willing to help as a:

    • Coach

    • Field prep/maintenance person

    • Umpire

Uniform inventories have been recorded - order typically has been made in first week of March.  High-school age team likely has enough players to make a team, jerseys and balls to support the this new team will be procured.

Umpires - the entire league in IVL struggled with umpires in 2021. Will add umpire to registration form as a request for assistance for parents of players.

General equipment/Grounds maintenance

Fill dirt is needed around concrete slab of the pickle ball court.

It was noted the pickle ball net was to be taken down for the winter.

Christmas party review

Good attendance and nearly all supplies were used.  Great reviews for Santa were noted.  A special thanks to Andy Primmer for stepping up and filling in as Santa.

Citizen comments:

Tom and Janice Jedlicka present - neighbors to the area adjacent to the basketball court inquired about a privacy fence being installed next to the court - whether that is something that is done by the owners or the city.  City unlikely to share cost of a fence given that the use type and nature of the park is not fundamentally changing.

Question of timing of new court installation - still depending on response of the contractors.

Concern was raised about the damage or wear that could occur to the court if use increases and questions about what it could cost to upkeep.  Discussion included references to prior meeting notes regarding appropriate hardware/hoops/backboards planned for the court, and mention that as with any equipment some maintenance is likely to be needed over time.

Question was posed to the board about the ice rink the city once had.  Rink was damaged and no longer functional and was disposed of years ago.  Many challenges that developed with rink were discussed that ultimately led to it no longer being assembled and used.

Motion to adjourn by Hebert.    Seconded by Lane.  Meeting adjourned 8:28 pm.
