Walford Park and Recreation Minutes

Regular Meeting                                                                                                Tuesday October 3rd, 2023

Meeting called to order at 7:07.  Lane, Miner, Hebert, Davis, Heber present. 

Motion to approve September minutes by Miner, seconded by Davis.  Approved unanimous. 

Possible action regarding Halloween party.

Volunteer sign-up to be initiated, as well as supplies ordered.  Some left over inventory to use from 2022. 

2024 Baseball Season

Discussion included options to consider for T-ball and coach-pitch scheduling.  Some scheduling challenges were experienced in 2023.  Miner to inquire with the Iowa Valley League regarding their approach to T-ball scheduling among or across the affiliated towns.

Jersey inventory will be required prior to 2024 jersey order.

Walford Fun Days

October event upcoming, soup supper and Smores in partnership with Trinity Lutheran Church.

There were no attendees at the Sept 23 bags tournament event.  

Alliant Tree Grant program

Discussion included completing application by November 1st.  Volunteer information and proposed amount of trees needed by November 1st submission deadline.  Comments also shared regarding historical tree plantings and associated effort and organization of volunteers.   

General equipment/grounds/maintenance

Comment regarding park bench replacement plan.  Once the on-order benches arrive one to be placed now at the basketball court, and the other to replace the old bench at the City Park that will be removed.

Lines on the plastic pickle ball tiles are wearing off, and there are a couple of tiles that have chips missing and require replacement - Lane to contact vendor regarding possible warranty replacement.

Citizen Comments: 

Question raised regarding propriety of active Parks Board members and Fun Days Committee members being participants in fund raising events with prizes or prize money involved. 

Still some areas noted where grading of soil to the edge of the concrete could be improved around pickle ball court.
